It's just incredibly heartbreaking that New York City (nicknamed Radio City of course) lost 4 great radio stations in a span of over 3 and 1/2 decades, WHN, WNBC (both of which were dismantled by WFAN), WPLJ (pre-May 31, 2019, before the K-Love folks took over), and now WCBS. For THE Greatest City in the World and the top media market in the States to have to deal with this 4 times in that span is an absolute travesty.

NYC had two 24-hour all news stations until early this morning. Audacy should've left WCBS 880 as is moved ESPN radio to WINS-AM 1010; the latter has the more appropriate call for a sports talk station.

The teletype sound heard over Mr. Cabot's naming of all those who passed through WCBS over its long history of providing the news, and originally used by the station (and heard behind many of its anchors) from the latter part of 1972 until about 1987, sounds exactly like a bank of Model 28 KSR's (of which they had three in a corner of their teletype room, the section where that recording may've been made). As I've queried before in the comments sections of other clips, are there any plans anywhere to have that sound put up on its own as a token to remember "Newsradio 88" by, as Audacy had done on their website with KYW's teletype sound after they ditched it in 2020? And who'd've thought this self-confessed radio geek (I'm referring to Wayne now) would end up being the standard-bearer and torch carrier for the station in the same manner that Edward R. Murrow had been for electronic journalism? That's no mean feat or task, and he certainly proved his mettle in this way.

Ellis --- This is a great post! Thank you. I'm very sad today about the passing of 880 WCBS. I'm also disappointed with the powers-that-be at ESPN. In 1982, 77 WABC transitioned from to talk with a final show by Ron Lundy and Dan Ingram. In 1988, 66 WNBC became WFAN, following a nice program and transition by Alan Colmes. In both cases, there was respect for the legacy of these AM O&Os. Not so with WCBS. As many of us heard, Wayne Cabot wrapped up a wonderful retrospective, to be followed by a minute or so of dead air, and an ESPN program already in progress. There was no acknowledment of WCBS by ESPN, no transition to the new programming. What a disappointment, and what disrespect to 880 WCBS and its legacy. They could have done better, and should have. Just my opinion .....

I thought it an ironic coincidence, the use of John Lennon's "Imagine" to close out WABC's years as a music station and, now, WCBS itself - as prior to 1946, WCBS's calls had been WABC. And to think that Wayne Cabot would end up as synonymous with WCBS as Lundy and Ingram were with WABC.

That's true-- I think another reason why WCBS was changed is because no one wants news in the old definition anymore (the 5 Ws); they want news in the sense of condemnation and argument against their political opponents (like FOX "News" has). That said, it could have been worse-- WCBS could have been changed to a political talk station, an Evangelical gospel/religious station, or anything else; I'll live with it being a sports station, because I've always enjoyed listening to sports radio.

@@EllisFeaster When I lived in the NY area, WCBS was my go to station for news. WCBS with its 50kW non-D signal was the choice of the suburbs of Long Island, NJ, CT and Westchester. WCBS had news bureaus in all of these areas. WINS, on the other hand, with its directional signal on 1010, concentrated its coverage on NYC. I lived in East Brunswick, NJ for a short time and couldn't get WINS. Now that WINS is simulcast on 92.3 FM, they are reaching areas they couldn't reach on AM only. Any chance WINS tweaks its programming slightly to better serve the suburbs?

@@EllisFeaster i wish i was in congress. i would write a bill to revamp the 96 telecommunications act. it could be pushed as a jobs bill. in my mind, the only way to save the industry is to bring back competition and the only way to do that is to make sure that corporations cannot own multiple outlets within an area. stations no longer serve the community.

Down the hall, some referred to the station as "useless one." I never did!

Not happening. NY had a unique circumstance where Audacy owned two all news stations, and some one offered them a bucket of cash to lease one of them.

Thank you Ellis. This is a wonderful Eulogy. I have now grown to hate sports with everything in me. My cousins constantly ruin Thanksgiving day, they won't turn off the football game. And now it takes the place of an Icon. Yea, I'd rather hear a ball game then to know when a traffic jam will clear.

@@EllisFeaster very well said. Our individual fabric of our lives (which very much 880 is part of) is really, yet sadly unwinding. Young bucks, money hungry, no taste for history, who are rather cold, and sterile are taking control of our way of life.
